For every member on our team, this was our first year of competing in VEX IQ. We had to choose a topic of interest to research for VEX IQ. We explored many engineering topics and finally coming to the final decision of arch bridges. Matt Alderson, one of our experts, gave us preliminary ideas for our project. We also looked at the topics given in the VEX IQ expectation document.
One of our first ideas was to learn about how eco-friendly houses are constructed. However, many of us were not very interested or motivated to investigate that. Therefore, we changed our topic to prosthetic body parts. We needed many experts for this topic because information was not as accessible for such a complicated topic. We emailed many experts however none responded. We had to change our topic again and quickly because time was running out. We changed our topic to the pythagorean theorem. This however was too simple and was hard to explain in a simple manner. Finally, the last time for changing our topic, we had decided our topic was arch bridges. As a team, we were very excited to learn about arch bridges and the topic has a lot of potential.
Our project is arch bridges. We went through many other project ideas too but we chose arch bridges for a reason. From our previous project idea, pythagorean theorem, we thought of arcs because pythagorean theorem is a formula for triangles which are one of the strongest shapes and we were reminded arcs which are also really strong. We had all found an interest in arcs themselves. It was the part that arcs were used in bridges that we found cool to then work with both arches and bridges. We chose arch bridges because we were all interested in all the components to arch bridges and the different types of arch bridges.
